Kumroj Village (Chitwan National Park)(CHTKUM2/3-N):
Kumroj is a small Rana Tharu village, located about 8km East
of Sauraha on the edge of Rapti River joining to Chitwan National
Park. There are about 150 Rana Tharu households. It takes 2:30hrs
by Elephant safari or 30 minutes drive from Sauraha.
Kumroj village is inhabitant of Rana Tharu community, who are
the largest and oldest ethnic group of Terai region. They are
professional farmers, who have lots of traditional knowledge
on agricultural farming.
That is why, most of Tharus settle on the bank of river.
They speak their own mother language (Bhojpuri, Maithili etc),
they live in joint family, and they make a long house of mud
and barley straw.
They do traditional (prearranged) marriage arranged by their
parents or their relatives-members, according to their castes
and horoscopes. They have practice Hindus as well as Buddhist
religion. They worship various gods in the form of animals such
as dog, crow, ox and cows. Most Tharus have their own traditional
god, called Bhuinya and Gor-raja. The family members often offer
animal's blood to god while worshiping.
Tharus are rich in their culture and tradition. According to
the month and season, they perform different kinds of folk songs
and folk dances. Among them Barkha Dance, Sakhya, Stick dance
are the major folk dances of Tharus. |

Near by Kumroj Tharu
village, Kumroj Community Forest is situated between Dhumre and
Icharni stream, which consists of tropical and subtropical forests.
There are more than 50 different types of grasses including the
Elephant grass (Saccharum) and immense tall tree. Inside the
park, more than 50 species mammal, 450 species birds and 50 amphibians
and reptiles. Specially you find one-rhorned rhinoceros, tiger
and Gharial Crocodile along with many other common species of
wild animals, such as Gaur, Wild Elephant, Four-horned antelope,
Striped Hyena, Pangolin, Ponitor Lizard, Sambar deer, Chital
(Spotted deer), Barking deer, Sloth bear, Palm Civet and Langur
as well as Bengal Florican, Lesser Florican, Giant hornbill,
Black stork, White stork, Peafowl, Red jungle fowl, Herons, Kingfisher,
Flycatchers and woodpeckers etc. |

Program |

Day.1.
Early in morning, departure from Kathmandu to Chitwan by tourist
bus (6h around). Arrival in Chitrasari, guide will wait at the
bus station then transfer to Sauraha, guide will explain you
day to day program, after taking lunch, drive to Kumroj village
(around 30minutes by drive) afternoon, visit Tharu village. Evening
around 17h, take dinner in Tharu village (local restaurant with
local hygienic food-Dal Bhat) then back to Jungle Tower (Jindagani
Machan).
Day.2.
At 5 o'clock for the breakfast at Tharu village then walk along
the riverside with beautiful sunrise view for bird watching with
natural guide and around 12h00, back to Tharu village for the
lunch then afternoon Elephant safari in deep Kumroj Community
Forest to discover different species of animals (possible to
see Rhinoceros, Monkey, different kinds of deer, wild buffalo,
blue cow, different kinds of birds and many more
) at evening
around 4h30 back to Kumroj village and dinner in Tharu Restaurent
and go back to Jungle Tower (Jindagani Machan).
(At night you will be chance to see wild animals from your room.)
Day.3.
Early in morning, prepare your back pack, takes breakfast then
drive to Elephant Breeding Farm, after visit elephant breeding
centre, departure to Sauraha and back to Kathmandu or Pokhara
according to your desire. |
